Mark began playing guitar in 1969.  Before that, he had been playing other instruments at home and in school bands for about 8 years. 

Mark played guitar in the pit orchestra for high school musicals and played the electric bass in the school's pep band.  During that time, he also played guitar and bass in a couple of rock bands.

He became interested in bluegrass music in about 1974 and started attending various festivals and jam sessions to scratch that itch.  It was at one of those jam sessions that he met the other "possums".
