Mike began playing mandolin in 2003. He started playing guitar at the age of 12 when he purchased an old electric guitar and tube amp from a garage sale for $15.00. He grew up around bluegrass at a young age sitting up and watching the Grand Ole Opry with his great grandparents every night.

He was also inspired watching his grandfather play guitar and mandolin with his uncles that played fiddle and banjo. He then starting playing acoustic guitar with he friends in the army when stationed overseas.

When he got home from being overseas he bought an acoustic guitar and mandolin to start playing bluegrass with his friends at a local bluegrass club called HABOT. This is also the club where he met the Possum's and was invited to play with the group in January of 2007.
